1. Biodiversity and ecosystems
The protection and restoration of Europe’s biodiversity and ecosystems are at the heart of the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy to 2030, as well as being a vital component of all work to protect the environment and tackle climate change. In 2021, the EEA provided enhanced monitoring and reporting in this area, along with provision of regular indicators for EU biodiversity, marine and freshwater policy, including:
- Publication of a national protected areas dataset with related assessment overview
- Continued support to the Knowledge Centre on Biodiversity
- Continued support to the UN Convention on Biodiversity process for the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework
- Publication of the
- Launch of the MapMyTree tool, under the three billion trees commitment of the EU Biodiversity Strategy
- Support to the European Commission on matters relating to protected areas, water directives and the Marine Directive
- Publication of briefings and reports covering topics such as marine biodiversity, water scarcity and droughts, water management challenges, and bathing water management
