The climate and environmental issues that are affecting Europe go well beyond European Union (EU) borders. International cooperation is key for solving today’s crises and this is the reason why the EEA is involved in carefully selected projects and cooperation agreements supporting environmental and climate policies in Europe and beyond.

Current projects and agreements

The EEA is involved in several other agreements that support environmental and climate policies, including:

  • In partnership with the Directorate-General for Climate Action (DG CLIMA) of the European Commission — Supporting the mission of adaptation to climate change, the development of the first EU-wide climate risk assessment and the upgrade of GHG inventories.
  • In partnership with Eurostat (ESTAT) — Supporting the better use of ESTAT data and accounts to improve the generation and sharing of environmental knowledge for EU policies.
  • In partnership with Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy (DG REGIO) of the European Commission — Supporting the implementation of regional and urban environmental indicators and analysis.
  • In partnership with the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission — Delivering technical and scientific assistance for the reporting cycle of the Nitrates Directive.
  • In partnership with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) — Addressing the triple planetary crisis — climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution — through data sharing, SDG monitoring, digital transformation activities, remote sensing and earth observation — see latest Memorandum of Understanding between EEA and UNEP.
  • In partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme/Mediterranean Action Plan (UNEP/MAP) — Tackling environmental challenges in the Mediterranean region through a Joint Work Plan for the period 2022–2030 that supports the use, access and management of environmental information and data for better monitoring, assessment and network aspects under the Barcelona Convention — see the Joint Work Plan 2022-2030.
  • In partnership with the International Resource Panel (IRP) — Collaborating in the development and dissemination of knowledge and science-based policy options for the sustainable use and management of natural resources, and raising awareness about the importance of sustainable resource management and integrating the natural resources perspectives in relevant global, regional and/or national policy fora — see Partnership Agreement.

Beyond the projects and cooperation stated above, the EEA does not typically act as a formal project partner for projects led by external organisations.
