Phosphorus emission intensity of domestic sector in period 1990, 2000-2009 in 23 European countries (EU20 + Switzerland, Norway and Turkey) The chart displays changes in phosphorus emission intensity of domestic sector in 1990, 2000 and 2009. Phosphorus emission intensity is expressed as kilogram of phosphorus discharged in water per inhabitant and year. Two sets of values are displayed for emission intensity for 2009. (1) Values calculated on the basis of default population equivalents and treatment efficiencies and (2) values calculated as sum of emission load reported voluntarily under the UWWTD and calculated load generated by population not connected to waste water treatment.

Nitrogen emission intensity of domestic sector in 1990, 2000–2009 (EU20 + Switzerland, Norway and Turkey) The chart displays changes in nitrogen emission intensity of domestic sector in 1990, 2000 and 2009. Nitrogen emission intensity is expressed as kilogram of nitrogen discharged in water per inhabitant and year. Two sets of values are displayed for emission intensity for 2009. (1) Values calculated on the basis of default population equivalents and treatment efficiencies and (2) values calculated as sum of emission loads reported voluntarily under the UWWTD and calculated load generated by population not connected to waste water treatment.

Use of freshwater resources in Europe The WEI+ provides a measure of total water use as a percentage of the renewable freshwater resources for a given territory and time scale. The WEI+ is an advanced geo-referenced implementation of the WEI. It quantifies how much water is  abstracted monthly or seasonally and how much water is returned after use to the environment via basins. The difference between water abstraction and return is regarded as water use. 
Energy intensity in Europe Energy intensity is the ratio between gross inland energy consumption (GIEC) and gross domestic product (GDP), calculated for a calendar year. GIEC is calculated as the sum of the gross inland consumption of the five sources of energy: solid fuels, oil, gas, nuclear and renewable sources. To monitor trends, GDP is in constant prices to avoid the impact of inflation, with a base year of 2010 . From 2019, GIEC in this report includes ambient heat used for heat pumps, which was not included in the previous reports.
Passenger and freight transport demand in Europe 'Passenger transport demand' is defined as the number of passenger kilometres (pkm) travelled every year in a country or group of countries. Inland passenger transport includes transport by passenger car, bus, coach and train. 'Freight transport demand' is defined as the amount of inland tonne-kilometres (tkm) travelled every year in a country or group of countries. Inland freight transport includes transport by road, rail, inland waterway, air and maritime. Transport via rail and inland waterway is based on movements within national territory ('territoriality principle'), regardless of the nationality of the vehicle or vessel; road transport is based on all movements of vehicles registered in the reporting country.  'Modal split' is defined as the proportion of total pkm allocated to different transport modes every year. The modal split of freight transport is defined as the percentage share of modes (road and rail) in total inland transport, including transport by road, rail and inland waterway. The 'decoupling indicator' is defined as the annual changes in the ratio of pkm/tkm (inland modes) to GDP (in 2010 prices) growth.

Emission intensity of the domestic sector in Europe This indicator is used to illustrate the emission intensity of the domestic sector (household plus services), expressed as the amount of discharged pollutant from wastewater treatment/or discharged without treatment per inhabitant per year. Furthermore, the indicator shows a decoupling of the emission of nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) and population growth across Europe. The values of change (increase/or decrease) in discharged load between 1990 and 2009 (expressed in percentages, where values in 1990 = 100%) are plotted against the values of change in population growth. Absolute decoupling occurs when the environmentally relevant variable is stable or decreasing while the driving force is growing. Relative decoupling occurs when the growth rate of the emission is positive, but less than the population growth rate.
