The Figure shows the development of consumer prices for different modes of passenger transport in EU-27 in the period 1998-2009. The prices are calculated as HICP-values (see methodology section below).

Methodology:: The numbers, derived from Eurostat and originally HICP-values indexed to the year 2005, were converted to an index with the baseline-year 1998. The Harmonised Indices of Consumer Prices (HICPs) are a set of European Union Consumer Price Indices calculated according to a harmonised approach and a single set of definitions. The HICP was launched in order to provide a comparable measure of consumer price inflation in the EU. It provides the only official measure of consumer price inflation in the euro-zone for the purposes of monetary policy.
