Data Visualization Water abstraction by source, 2000-2019 Water abstraction is from groundwater and surface water. Surface water contains water abstraction from rivers, reservoirs and lakes. The figure illustrates total annual water abstraction from groundwater and surface water by economic sector, i.e. agriculture, electricity cooling, manufacturing cooling, manufacturing, mining and quarrying, construction and public water supply, as defined in NACE (Statistical Classification of Economic Activities in the European Communities) sections. Hydropower is excluded.

Figure Seasonal water scarcity conditions across Europe, measured by the water exploitation index plus (WEI+) for sub river basins, 2019 Water exploitation index plus (WEI+) illustrates the percentage of water use versus water available in the respective subbasin.
Figure Worst seasonal water scarcity conditions for European countries in 2019, measured by the water exploitation index plus (WEI+) This figure gives an overview of the worst quarterly water scarcity conditions (maximum WEI+ in a consecutive 3-month period) of 2019 across countries in Europe. Seasonal WEI+ values are estimated as quarterly averages per country. The worst quarter of the year for water scarcity conditions is provided in brackets next to the name of the country. Annual quarters are: Q1 (January-March), Q2 (April-June), Q3 (July-September), Q4 (October-December). No data is available for Montenegro and Lichtenstein.

Water scarcity conditions is adopted, i.e. when WEI+ values are above 20% for at least a quarter of the year in a given river sub basin; annual quarters are: Q1 (January-March), Q2 (April-June), Q3 (July-September), Q4 (October-December). No sufficient data available from Italy, hence Italian river basins have not been included in the analysis.

Figure Water intensity of crop production in Europe, 2007-2016 • Total water input is expressed in m3/ha and gross value added is expressed in purchasing power standard (PPS)/ha, where the area in ha represents the sum of arable land and land with permanent crops. The monetary unit being used (PPS) accounts for purchasing power differences among countries. Theoretically, one PPS can buy the same amount of goods and services in each country. • Water use intensity of crop production is classified at the regional level according to the quartile (Q) distribution of all time series (2005-2016): below Q1 (light blue) indicates a low water intensity of crop production; above Q3 (dark blue) indicates a high water intensity of crop production; and between Q1 and Q3 (mid-blue) indicates a moderate water intensity of crop production. • Regional groupings of EU Member States and the UK are based on UN Geoscheme — Standard M49: eastern Europe (Bulgaria, Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania and Slovakia), northern Europe (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Sweden and the United Kingdom), southern Europe (Cyprus, Greece, Croatia, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Slovenia and Spain) and western Europe (Austria, Belgium, Germany, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands). • Gap filling has been performed for certain years and countries: 2010 data have been used for 2011 Greece data; 2006 data have been used for 2007 Hungary data; 2005 data have been used for 2007 Luxembourg data; 2009 data have been used for 2010 Portugal data; 2015 data have been used for 2016 Sweden data.

Indicator Specification Water intensity of crop production in Europe The water intensity of crop production is defined as the total volume of water input (irrigation and soil moisture; measured in cubic meters (m 3) ) for one unit of gross value added generated from the production of all crop types, excluding relevant subsidies on crops (GVA adjusted for subsidies; measured in Purchasing Power Standard (PPS)). The lower the indicator value, the  less water intensive the crop production.
