Production and consumption of ozone-depleting substances in Europe Ozone-depleting substances (ODS) are long-lived chemicals that contain chlorine and/or bromine and can deplete the stratospheric ozone layer. This indicator quantifies the current state of the ozone layer, the progress being made towards meeting the EU’s Montreal Protocol commitments and trends in the remaining uses of ODS within the EU. Context: the ozone layer refers to a region of the Earth’s atmosphere (the stratosphere) in which ozone ( O 3 ) is present in concentrations high enough to absorb most of the sun's ultraviolet (UV) radiation. This natural phenomenon is essential for life on Earth because UV radiation damages living tissue. Ozone depletion refers to the steady decline in the concentration of ozone in the stratosphere and the decrease in stratospheric ozone in the polar regions during the spring season. This has become widely known as the 'ozone hole'. This phenomenon was first observed during the 1970s, when it was shown that the ozone hole was caused by complex chemical reactions in the atmosphere involving so-called ODS, which are almost exclusively a result of human industrial activity.

Emissions and supply of fluorinated greenhouse gases in Europe This indicator tracks trends since 1990 in anthropogenic emissions of the F-gases listed below. The indicator also tracks trends since 2007 in the supply of F-gases. Furthermore, figures for the shares of major intended applications of EU supply are given for the latest available reporting year. EU supply is a parameter derived from company reporting under the F-gas Regulation, which provides information on the actual use of F-gases by EU industries. It focuses on potentially emission-relevant supplies of gases to EU industries and thus does not cover supplies intended for feedstock use or destruction. The lists of gases covered in the supply part of the indicator differ between the period 2007-2013 and the period starting in 2014. For the period 2007-2013, data on only supply in bulk are available. (The term 'bulk' refers to shipments of gases contained in gas containers of all sizes, ranging from large ISO containers of several tonnes to small gas bottles of a few grams.) Since 2014, supply within products and equipment has been recorded. Both of these add up to total EU supply. Bulk supply is calculated by first adding reported amounts for: production bulk imports reclamation stocks from own production or imports held on 1 January of the reporting year and then subtracting the following reported amounts: bulk exports amounts used as feedstock amounts imported for destruction amounts from own production sent for destruction before sales stocks from own production or imports held on 31 December of the reporting year. Gas supplies in products and equipment are the gas contents of products and equipment imported and placed on the EU market. Lists of gases  All gases listed have been tracked for emissions since 1990. Gases in bold have not been tracked for supply in all years since 2007. Gases outside the scope of tracking supply for only the period 2007-2013 are given in italics. Net supply is calculated by firstly adding reported amounts for: production imports (bulk imports only, imports contained in products or equipment are not considered in the reporting under the F-Gas Regulation) stocks held on 1 January of the reporting year ‘other amounts collected for reclamation or destruction from within the EU’, and then subtracting the following reported amounts: exports (bulk exports only, exports contained in products or equipment are not considered in the reporting under the F-Gas Regulation) destruction (on-site by reporting companies and off-site within the EU on reporting companies’ behalf) amounts used as feedstock by reporting companies stocks held on 31 December of the reporting year.   Furthermore, the shares of intended applications of F-gas net supply in the latest available reporting year are given, differentiating between refrigeration and air-conditioning fire protection aerosols foams electrical equipment other, unknown or no information reported.
