Protecting Europe's land and soil resources is fundamental for a sustainable future Land and soil underpin life on our planet. The way we currently use these vital and finite resources in Europe is not sustainable. Human activities — growing cities and infrastructure networks, intensive agriculture, pollutants and greenhouse gases released to the environment — transform Europe’s landscapes and exert increasing pressure on land and soil. The European Environment Agency’s (EEA) Signals 2019, published today, looks at a series of issues linked to land and soil, including links to climate change, agriculture, soil biodiversity, contamination and governance, and stresses why we need to manage them sustainably.
Towards clean and smart mobility Transport plays a critical role in the way we live. Our food, clothes and household waste all need to be transported, contributing to our economy and quality of life. But the increasing use of planes, cars and other fossil-fuel dependent modes of transport is causing more pollution, putting at risk our environment and health. The European Environment Agency’s (EEA) Signals 2016 explores how Europe’s carbon-dependent transport sector can be turned into a clean and smart mobility system.

Sustainably Yours photo competition Many of goods and services contributing to our quality of life and well-being exert pressure on the environment and global climate. The way we consume and produce (and discard) these goods and services releases pollutants, damages natural habitats and contributes to climate change – all which in turn harm our health and life on Earth. In fact, supported by over-arching European Union policies, many authorities and organisations across Europe are already taking action to reduce negative impacts. To highlight the importance of living sustainably, the European Environment Agency organised the photography competition Sustainably Yours.
