The map shows the number of premature deaths (PDs) attributed to PM2.5 in 2020 at NUTS3 level for European countries. The PDs, which in absolute terms are higher for those NUTS3 level regions with the highest populations, have been normalised by 100,000 inhabitants, to make the numbers comparable among regions. For countries where NUTS3 regions are not available, the national value is shown.
The dataset “Extended wetland ecosystem” is a derived product of the Corine Land Cover (CLS) layer for the year 2018 which has then been reclassified into 20 wetland classes on the basis of ancillary spatial layers (“Water and Wetness 2018” and “Riparian Zone Layer” Copernicus products, the “Ecosystem types of Europe” v3.1 and “The Global Spatial Water Explorer” datasets). Besides the traditional types of inland and coastal wetlands (i.e. marshes, rivers, lakes, lagoons, estuaries), the layer also covers the forest, grassland and agricultural ecosystems which are seasonally or permanently flooded (i.e. riparian forests, wet grasslands, rice fields) and are therefore considered as wetlands according to the Ramsar Convention definition and typology. This wetland reclassification and mapping considers their hydro-ecological characteristics and provides information about the real spatial extent and distribution of varied wetland habitats.
The EEA marine assessment vector areas are harmonised units used for statistics. The assessment areas allow the consistent calculation of status and trends in the EU waters, e.g. for marine protected areas coverage.

The figure shows the premature deaths attributed to long-term exposure to PM2.5 above the 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) guideline level in EU-27 in the period 2005-2020. The linear trend of that time series and the estimated year by which the Zero Pollution Action Plan (ZPAP) target (by 2030, minimum 55% reduction of the premature deaths occurred in 2005) would be met if the premature deaths are reduced following that linear trend.
The 'GISCO NUTS 2021' data set represents the NUTS 2021 regulation and statistical regions by means of multipart polygon, polyline and point topology. The NUTS geographical information is completed by attribute tables and a set of cartographic help lines to better visualize multipart polygonal regions. Public access to the full data set is not possible due to intellectual property rights.
This metadata refer to the vector dataset presenting, for NUTS3 regions, the average travel time to the nearest hospital in 2020. The data has been developed by Eurostat to measure how easily basic services can be reached by the resident population, based on spatial analyses of the location of healthcare facilities, combined with the road network. Healthcare facility were computed (note this could have been across a national border).
The regional seas around Europe are the Baltic Sea, the Barents Sea, the Black Sea, the Iceland Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the North-east Atlantic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the White Sea. The regional seas are harmonised with existing boundaries established under the Regional Sea Conventions (OSPAR, HELCOM, Barcelona, and Bucharest Convention) and MSFD regions and subregions, as agreed by the Marine Strategy Framework Directive Committee in November 2016.
This data set show the European agriculture area in 2018 at 100m spatial resolution, covering EEA38 member countries and the United Kingdom. The raster value is 1 when agricultural area is identified and NoData for other land cover / land uses.
The figure shows waste generation per capita by European countries. Data presented in form of bar chart are displayed as a comparison of the reference (2010) and last available year.
