Sea ice extent (SIE) is defined as the area covered by sea ice, that is the area of ocean having more than 15% Sea Ice Concentration (SIC). Sea Ice Concentration is the fractional coverage of an ocean area covered with sea ice. All Northern Hemisphere sea ice is included, except for lake or river ice. The SIC data are computed from passive microwave satellite data. The data were produced by the EUMETSAT OSI SAF v2 data, with R&D input from ESA CCI. The data are available from the Copernicus Marine Environment and Monitoring Service (CMEMS).
