Figure Total waste generation in the EU (excluding major mineral waste), indexed to 2010, and compared with GDP, 2010-2020 Figure shows indexed values of waste generation per capita and gross domestic product (GDP) with year 2010 as a reference year (2010=100%). Production phase shows generation of total waste and waste excluding major mineral wastes. GDP was chosen as a basic indicator of the economic growth as it expresses the total value of goods and services produced in the country (the components of GDP include personal consumption expenditures plus business investment plus government spending plus (exports minus imports)).

Waste generation and decoupling, EU-27 This figure shows indexed values of waste production, population and gross domestic product (GDP) with the year 2010 as a reference year (2010=100%). The production phase shows generation of total waste and waste excluding major mineral wastes in absolute terms. GDP was chosen as a basic indicator of economic growth as it expresses the total value of goods and services produced in the country (the components of GDP include personal consumption expenditure plus business investment plus government spending plus (exports minus imports)). Population, expressed as average population, is an important demographic indicator, which provides insights into development in a number of possible consumers and waste producers.

Indicator Specification Waste generation and decoupling in Europe The two figures in this indicator provide information on waste generation. Figure 1 shows indexed values of waste generation, population and GDP, with 2010 being taken as the reference year (2010 = 100%). GDP was chosen as a basic indicator of economic growth, and average population as an important demographic indicator and driver of waste generation. Figure 2 shows waste generation, excluding major mineral wastes, per capita by European country. Data presented in the form of a bar chart are displayed for the reference year (2010) and the last year for which data are available (2018).

Size of the vehicle fleet in Europe Vehicle ownership is defined as the number of road vehicles (passenger cars and two-wheelers) per number of inhabitants. The numbers of buses and coaches per number of inhabitants has also been included. The indicator can be extended to include other vehicles specified by passenger transport mode (i.e. coaches, rail, maritime, air), although these are not privately owned. Freight transport intensity is defined as the number of vehicles per unit of GDP, specified by freight transport mode (road, rail, inland, maritime). The share of diesel cars in the entire passenger car fleet is defined as the number of diesel vehicles per total number of passenger cars.
