Left chart: The extent of land take during 2012-2018 (in percentage of the 2012 value) in protected areas of the FUAs is presented in the barchart, broken down by countries and protection type. The dataset covers the entire EEA-39 region but the figure only presents EU-27+UK countries. Right map: Land take is derived from comparing the Urban Atlas 2012 and 2018 datasets of the Copernicus Land Monitoring Service. Land take is expressed as the converted area in percentage of the 2012 land cover extent (percentage of non-urban land cover in 2012 that is converted to urban land cover by 2018). The dataset covers the entire EEA-39 region but te map only presents EU-27+UK countries.
The chart compares the current residual and total municipal waste generation against 3 possible scenarios: 1) Business as usual (with a 3.7 % increase in total municipal waste) while meeting the 60 % recycling target; 2) A solution scenario, with a 3.7 % increase in total municipal waste that would be offset by 73 % recycling rate; 3) A solution scenario in which the 60 % recycling target would be met, and 34 % of total waste would be prevented
The chart puts together the trends (2004-2020) and projections (2020-2030) in both total and residual municipal waste for EU-27, for the case in which the 60 % recycling rate target of 2030 would be met. A comparison with the residual target allows for some insight on the distance of the projections to the actual target.
The chart illustrates the trends in residual municipal waste for EU-27 from 2004 to 2020. Moreover, it shows the non-binding target of residual waste for 2030 (and the corresponding necessary trend line to achieve such target)
The map composition intends to show the different granularity, i.e. spatial resolution, between Corine Land Cover and Urban Atlas datasets, providing three examples in three different cities from different countries.
