Importance of monitoring agri-environmental indicators highlighted in new publication

A new publication entitled "Building agri-environmental indicators : focussing on the European area frame survey LUCAS" has been released today. The product of a collaboration between the European Environment Agency, the Agriculture and Environment Directorate-Generals, Eurostat, and the Joint Research Centre, the publication focuses on use of the Land Use/Cover Area Frame Statistical Survey (LUCAS) for building landscape and agri-environmental indicators.

EU and candidate countries' progress between 1990 and 2000 towards reaching their targets under the Kyoto Protocol is assessed in this report. It shows which countries are on track, the greenhouse gas emission trends in each sector and the reasons for increases or decreases. The report supports the European Commission's annual evaluation report under the EU greenhouse gas monitoring mechanism and is a background report to the EEA Environmental Issue report No. 33 "Greenhouse gas emission trends and projections in Europe".
