Charter of European Cities and Towns Towards Sustainability

Term
The Charter of European Cities and Towns Towards Sustainability (Aalborg Charter) was approved by the participants at the European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns held in Aalborg, Denmark from 24 to 27 May 1994. The Aalborg Charter was initially signed by 80 European local authorities and 253 representatives of international organisations, national governments, scientific institutes, consultants and individuals. By signing the charter, European cities, towns and counties committed themselves to enter into Local Agenda 21 processes and develop long-term action plans towards sustainability, and initiated the European Sustainable Cities and Towns Campaign.
