The map shows the Recreation potential index (RPI), which corresponds to the ecosystem function. It is a ranking of the potential recreation provision in the EU, independently whether such potential is or can be used. Ecosystems highly impacted by human activities (i.e. intensive agriculture) have the lowest score, while natural and semi-natural vegetation, protected areas and lake-sides have the highest score since they either are characterized by a high degree of naturalness, or provide specific opportunities for recreation (areas of outstanding natural value), or exert specific attraction (i.e. water bodies).
