Key messages

  • VGI can reduce the total ownership cost of an electric vehicle by providing ancillary services to support the proper functioning of the power grid. This could promote a faster uptake of such vehicles.
  • VGI can be used to actively manage electric vehicle charging. This would make it possible to avoid further consumption during periods of high energy demand (peak demand). As a result, greenhouse gase and air pollutant emissions could fall.
  • VGI can speed up the vehicle’s battery depletion in specific conditions. This degradation can be managed, but it is important to take this into account when evaluating the technology’s environmental benefits.
  • VGI will benefit from policies addressing existing regulatory barriers and the lack of a market framework.
