Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change

The Wegener Center for Climate and Global Change is an interdisciplinary, internationally oriented institute of the University of Graz (School of Environmental, Regional and Educational Sciences, with partner institutes also in the Faculties of Natural Sciences, Business, Social and Economic Sciences, and Arts and Humanities), which serves as core research center for pooling the competences of the University in the areas "Climate, Environmental, and Global Change". The institute brings together, in a building close to the University central campus, research teams and scientists from fields such as geophysics and climate physics, meteorology, economics, geography, and regional sciences. At the same time, close links exist and are further developed with many cooperation partners, both nationally and internationally. The research interests extend from monitoring, analysis, modeling and prediction of climate and environmental change via climate impact research to the analysis of the human dimensions of these changes, i.e., the role of humans in causing and being affected by climate and environmental change as well as concerning adaptation and mitigation. The director of the institute, hosting about 50 researchers, is the geophysicist Gottfried Kirchengast, the lead partner is the economist Karl Steininger.

EUROPEAN SOIL DATA CENTRE (ESDAC)

The European Soil Data Centre (ESDAC) contains currently many soil data and information; most of the offered data are at European scale, while, when possible, links to national or global datasets are provided. Datasets are organized in some broad categories. A first category contains the European Soil Database (ESDB), datasets that have been derived with the help of the ESDB and general European datasets that contain soil properties. A second category offers data that are related to soil threats (erosion, soil organic carbon, landslides, compaction, salinization, soil biodiversity, contaminated sites, soil sealing, etc.) A third category offers soil point data (LUCAS, SPADE, etc) A fourth category contains data that stem from projects.

Space4environment

23 Aug 2016

The objective of space4environment – founded in 2007 still under its former name GeoVille Environmental Services – can be best summarised by their maxim “using space data to provide space for the environment”. They believe that earth observation data is a vital asset in today’s need for timely and relevant information on the state and trends of the environment. Nonetheless, they know that just providing mapping or monitoring services and data to their customers is not enough, but to add value to these basic data and contribute to their reporting and decision-making with policy relevant information and knowledge. By close cooperation with their customers they aim at optimizing the value of their spatial data and information. Besides user requirements engineering and quality assessment of land related products, space4environment focuses on thematic assessments in support of European environmental policies (e.g. Biodiversity Strategy 2020 and its targets, Land related resources efficiency, Urban Thematic Strategy).
