European Union flag

The year 2025 has been marked by significant collective achievement around our five-yearly report, renewed strategic direction and a deepened sense of shared purpose across the EEA-Eionet community. The past months have showcased not only the strength of our network but also the increasing importance of innovation, agility and digitalisation in how we generate, create and deliver environmental knowledge for Europe.

The cornerstone achievement of 2025 is undoubtedly the launch of ‘Europe’s environment 2025’. With its comprehensive assessment, extensive thematic briefings and detailed country profiles — backed by interactive data visualisations, it represents a milestone in how environmental knowledge is co-created across our Agency, our member and cooperating countries. From its earliest concept to the moment of publication, this report has been shaped by hundreds of experts, National Focal Points, topic centres and institutions in our network Eionet. Their insights and expertise have been essential in providing a robust assessment of the state of Europe’s environment.

Eionet is unique: a knowledge network built not on top-down directives but on partnership, trust and shared expertise. Countries contribute data, insights, expertise and innovation. They help define our priorities and ensure our outputs reflect the diversity and richness of Europe’s environmental landscape. Their contributions are central to our credibility and to the success we collectively deliver.

Policy dialogue and societal engagement

Since its release in September, Europe's environment 2025 continues to be presented and discussed in EU settings and many countries —from Finland and Estonia to Portugal, Italy and Sweden. These engagements matter: they bring the knowledge to life, ensure it is grounded in local and political realities, and create space for policy dialogue and societal engagement.

A striking example of such impact is the regional conference in November in Podgorica, Montenegro. The event brought together policymakers, experts and partners from six Western Balkan countries, underpinning the strong commitment across the region to advancing environmental knowledge and the role the EEA can play in supporting these efforts.

These achievements are taking place against the backdrop of the updated EEA-Eionet Strategy for the second period of implementation 2026-2030, just endorsed by our Management Board. Now, our Strategy puts even greater emphasis on adding value to countries and attributes joint responsibility in providing objective, reliable and comparable information for supporting policy implementation at European and national levels. The update also strengthens the focus on digitalisation. In partnership with Eionet, we will develop and share collective expertise on the opportunities and use of digitalisation and technology, including AI.

In the year ahead, we will continue strengthening our role as a partner and service provider. This means deepening our engagement with our member and cooperating countries, enhancing our digital capabilities, supporting capacity development and ensuring that our environmental assessments remain timely, authoritative and actionable. It also means remaining attentive to emerging trends, from climate risk and biodiversity loss to industrial transformation and circularity, so that our knowledge continues to support Europe in navigating uncertainty while seizing opportunities for innovation and resilience.

Delivering our collective mission

None of this is possible without the unwavering engagement and commitment of our member and cooperating countries, which is key to a successful joint implementation of the updated Strategy to 2030. Our close collaboration with EU institutions and other EU agencies also ensures that our work remains closely aligned with Europe’s environmental and climate ambitions and is relevant also to many other policy priorities such as competitiveness, health, just transition, security and preparedness. Together, we work to accelerate the sustainability transition and to improve the wellbeing of Europe’s citizens.

The launch and dissemination of Europe’s Environment 2025, the renewed momentum behind the EEA-Eionet Strategy, and the continuous strengthening of our network demonstrate the strength and relevance of our collective mission. Most importantly, they show what we can achieve when we combine national expertise, European cooperation and a shared commitment to a more sustainable future.

To all colleagues, national partners, experts and institutions across Europe: thank you for your dedication, professionalism and partnership. Our achievements this year are truly joint achievements.
