We are getting ready to publish our five-yearly flagship report ‘Europe’s environment 2025’. It is the most comprehensive assessment of the state and outlook of Europe’s environment, climate and sustainability, providing trusted knowledge and data, co-created with our Eionet partners. At the European Environment Agency, our strength lies in our knowledge and our country network. Together, we provide evidence-based insights to inform the decisions that will shape Europe’s future.

On 29 September, the European Environment Agency will publish its flagship report ‘Europe’s environment 2025’ — the seventh edition of our state of environment reports. This edition arrives at a time when reliable knowledge is more essential than ever.

Across Europe and beyond, we are living in an age of profound disruptions, growing disinformation and accelerating complexity. The climate crisis, environmental degradation, geopolitical conflicts and instability, technological developments, and social inequalities are all questioning our hopes for a better future.

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, with its cascading effects on energy, food security, and multilateral norms, has brought security, resilience and competitiveness to the forefront of Europe’s strategic agenda — each deeply intertwined with how we use and manage natural resources.

Achieving the environment, climate and sustainability goals demands institutional capacity, societal engagement, and, above all, a steadfast commitment to evidence-based decision-making. Europe needs integrated responses that reflect the interdependence of climate, environment, economy, and security. Such decisions cannot be guided by disinformation or ungrounded opinions. They must rest on solid, trusted knowledge.

In this context, the role of the European Environment Agency and our Eionet network is more vital than ever. Trusted data, knowledge and monitoring are essential to track progress, identify gaps, and guide course corrections. Europe’s environment 2025 embodies this mission.

The report provides a comprehensive and forward-looking assessment of the state and outlook of Europe’s environment. It stresses how nature underpins Europe’s competitiveness and security.

Europe has made significant progress and our report includes many concrete actions and success stories from our member countries. Yet, many challenges remain. The report will provide a comprehensive overview of these challenges, latest trends and the outlook.

The report consists of three parts: the main report, 35 thematic briefings and country profiles, prepared by EEA member countries themselves, which make this edition the result of true co-creation, drawing on the collective expertise of our 38 member countries through the Eionet partners including the European Topic Centres. We gratefully acknowledge their contributions, as well as those of the many stakeholders who engaged with us throughout the process. Together, we are delivering a unique, European knowledge base.

I invite you to read the report and explore its different components, once the whole package is released on 29 September. In doing so, I encourage you to see it not only as an assessment of Europe’s environment but also as a source of trusted knowledge that can help steer us through uncertainty and keep Europe on a path toward a healthier, fairer, and more sustainable future.

Europe’s future is ours to shape.
