Green bonds as a percentage of total bonds issued by corporates (corporate bonds), by governments (sovereign bonds), and by both corporations and governments, EU

This figure shows green bonds, which are issued specifically to finance green projects (i.e. the proceeds from green bonds are earmarked for green projects), as a share of all bonds issued by corporates and governments in Europe. The use of proceeds is typically guided by a set of criteria or green bond frameworks. The average values include the issuance of all bonds issued by corporates and governments in the calendar year that were issued in a country of the European Union. To be included in the calculation, the bond must be listed with the data provider. Only sovereign bonds issued by governments with a maturity of more than one year are included. The shares per type of issuer include all bonds and green bonds issued by corporates and governments.

Terrestrial protected area coverage, EU

The figure illustrates the changes in the share of terrestrial protected areas (Natura 2000 and other national designations) in the EU-27 land over time. It tracks progress towards the target of the EU biodiversity strategy for 2030 to legally protect and effectively manage a minimum of 30% of EU land by 2030.

Common bird index in the EU, 1990-2023

The figure shows changes in population abundance of 168 common bird species, including those associated with specific habitats: 39 common farmland bird species and 34 common forest bird species. The index for each group is calculated as an EU aggregate, using 1990 as reference year. Each of the three EU bird indices is presented as a smoothed time series and is calculated with 95% confidence limits.

Annual economic losses caused by weather- and climate-related extreme events in the EU Member States

In this indicator, events are grouped according to the available information in CATDAT. Meteorological events: storms (including lightning and hail). Hydrological events: floods. Climatological events: heatwaves, wildfires, droughts, cold spells, frost. Total economic losses, in EUR billion (2024 prices), are based on recorded estimates from CATDAT provided by RiskLayer (dataset url is not available) and Eurostat structural indicators.

Concentration of nitrate in groundwater (mg NO 3 /l) on EU aggregated level from 2007 to 2023 based on time series from 22 countries and 2104 groundwater bodies that have been reported to WISE-SoE.
