EEA Signals 2024 – Towards healthy and resilient waters in Europe

EEA Signals 2024 gives an overview of key challenges and opportunities about improving the health and resilience of Europe's waters. It includes articles covering nature, pollution and climate change, and it tells a story about how Europe has improved the quality of its bathing waters. Three interviews take a closer look at work to safeguard waters in Austria, sustainability of chemicals, and the possibility of removing chemical pollution from water.

Editorial – Strong action needed to strengthen Europe's water resilience

Water is fundamental to life, sustaining ecosystems and supporting our societies with everything from drinking water to food production and energy generation. Yet, Europe’s freshwater resources are under increasing pressure. Climate change, pollution, and unsustainable water management are worsening water stress, and the challenges are only growing. Urgent action is needed to safeguard Europe’s water security and build resilience in the face of these evolving pressures.

Healthy waters depend on healthy nature

The health of water bodies is closely linked with the health of nature. Both play a vital role in our lives and for the environment, providing food and habitats for millions of species. Sadly, many ecosystems and waters in Europe face uncertain futures due to pollution and the unsustainable use of natural resources. Urgent action is needed to restore lakes, rivers and coastal waters to support a healthy nature.

Interview – Safeguarding water quality in Austria

Good-quality water is a matter of pride for many Austrians. From flood prevention to competing demands from different users, we spoke about water challenges and management with Monika Mörth, Director General for Water Management from the Austrian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Regions and Water Management.

Interview – Removing ‘forever chemicals’ from drinking water

Europeans can enjoy safe drinking water that has been cleaned of pathogens and other pollutants. But PFAS substances in water are a growing concern. We interviewed Dr Zongsu Wei, Associate Professor and group leader for the Water Engineering Innovation Lab at Aarhus University in Denmark.

Interview – Towards more sustainable and safer chemicals

One of the key concerns for water quality in Europe is chemical pollution. The European Chemicals Agency’s (ECHA) purpose is to protect health and the environment through their work for chemical safety. How do they approach the task of preventing harm from chemicals? We interviewed Dr Sharon McGuinness, ECHA’s Executive Director.

Extreme climate events highlight the need for better water management

Climate change is posing an increasing threat to Europe’s water resources and exacerbating water-related risks. This majorly impacts people and the economy. Climate risks are affecting both water quality and freshwater supply for people and the environment. Extreme weather events like heatwaves, droughts and floods are impacting people and societal systems; waterbodies; and the natural and built ecosystems that depend on them. Reducing pollution and water use will help Europe cope with climate change in the future.

European bathing waters – a health and wellbeing success story

Making sure the European bathing waters are safe for people’s health is a crucial task. It is also a success story at the European level: 96% of our designated bathing waters meet the safety thresholds. New challenges emerge, however – mostly related to climate change.
