Total net GHG emissions in the EU (1990-2050)

The chart shows the evolution of EU net emissions over the past decades, displaying how the EU has reduced its Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions at an accelerating pace. These figures include domestic emissions, emissions and removals from the LULUCF sector and emissions from international aviation and international maritime transport, as covered under EU regulations.

In this figure, the EU total net GHG emissions include all GHG emissions and removals regulated by EU law. The estimation of historical emissions from international aviation and maritime sectors for this scope relies on data derived from the JRC Idees methodology. The highlighted targets are derived from the European Climate Law for 2030 and 2050, while for 2040 the -90% target as recommended by EC is visualised, applying the percentage reductions to the calculated 1990 baseline figures.
