The figure shows the development of total emissions from end-users from 1990 to 2022 as the sum of direct and indirect emissions: direct emissions correspond to those in Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory categories and indirect emissions are those re-allocated from the energy supply sector (energy industries and fugitive emissions), based on energy use reported in energy statistics for each end-user sector. These emissions comprise about 75 % of total GHG emissions of EU-27. Between 1990 and 2022, emission decreased by 30% with highest reduction of 52% in the industry sector, followed by the residential sector (41%). An increase of emissions took place in the transport sector (14%). With the reattribution of indirect emissions, especially the industry sector becomes more prominent, but indirect emissions of this sector declined by almost 60% in this timeframe, so that the share of the transport sector in total end-use emissions became highest in latest years.
