Trends in the status of assessed commercial fish and shellfish stocks relative to the Good Environmental Status (GES) criteria for fishing mortality and reproductive capacity in Europe's marine regions
Chart (interactive)
This figure shows trends in the status of assessed commercially exploited fish and shellfish stocks between 1947 and 2023, expressed in two metrics: fishing mortality (F) and reproductive capacity (SSB), relative to their policy thresholds for the Marine Strategy Framework Directive's 'good environmental status' (GES), i.e. FMSY and SSBMSY or MSYBtrigger, respectively.
• For fishing mortality, values greater than 1 indicate that exploitation exceeds levels consistent with maximum sustainable yield (F>FMSY), implying unsustainable fishing pressure in the long term.
• For reproductive capacity, values greater than 1 indicate that spawning stock biomass exceeds MSY-based reference points (SSB>SSBMSY or MSYBtrigger), implying that stocks are in a healthy biological condition.
• For the Mediterranean and Black Sea, no GES threshold is available for reproductive capacity; the dashed horizontal line represents the 2003 reference level used for these regions.

Additional information
- Stocks assessments have different starting years depending on data availability. In recent years, trend estimates are based on a larger number of assessed stocks and are therefore considered more robust.
- Median values (50th percentile) are used to describe trends in fishing pressure and reproductive capacity. Shaded areas represent confidence limits (2.5th and 97.5th percentiles).
Abbreviations:
MSY = maximum sustainable yield;
F = fishing mortality;
FMSY = the fishing mortality that will lead to MSY in the long term;
SSB = spawning stock biomass (a measure of reproductive capacity);
SSBMSY = the spawning stock biomass capable of producing MSY;
MSYBtrigger = either the biomass at the lower level of the range (5th percentile) of SSB able to produce MSY or Bpa (a stock status reference point above which the stock is considered to have full reproductive capacity, having accounted for estimation uncertainty).
Temporal coverage:
1947-2023 (Baltic Sea and North-East Atlantic Ocean); 2003-2023 (Mediterranean Sea and Black Sea)
