Industrial releases of pollutants to air and economic activity in the EU-27

The figure shows the trend of pollutant releases into air in the EU-27 from 2010 to 2024 by using 2010 releases values as reference. In addition, gross value added (GVA) from the industry sector is presented.

Additional information

GVA, gross value added; NMVOC, non-methane volatile organic compound; NO_x, nitrogen oxides; PM₁₀, particulate matter with a diameter of less than 10μm; SO_x, sulphur oxides.

GVA is used as a proxy for the economic activity of industry in Europe, accounting for inflation, based on 2010 values in chain linked volumes.

Methodology

Pollutant releases reported under E-PRTR/LCP dataflow for the relevant pollutant have been aggregated at EU-27 level and index against 2010 level has been calculated.

Data from Czechia, Lithuania, Malta and Slovakia has been gap-filled for 2023 and 2024. Data for Cyprus has been gap-filled for 2024.
