Chart (interactive)
The figure shows the share of bathing water of excellent quality by type and country in 2024.
Note: The assessment covers 22,127 bathing waters in Europe that were reported to the EEA for the 2024 season. In the EU, there were a total of 21,848 bathing waters. Only 79.7% of bathing waters in Poland — almost 3 percentage points more than in the 2023 season — were assessed for their quality. A significant share of unassessed waters were those which had been newly identified for bathing; complete sets of samples — which would allow an assessment compliant with BWD requirements — were not available to classify these.
For landlocked countries (Austria, Czechia, Hungary, Luxembourg, Slovakia, Switzerland), data on coastal waters are not relevant (cannot exist).
Data on inland waters were reported by all countries, except Cyprus and Malta.
