See all EU institutions and bodiesThe past decade has seen a rapid and successful shift in EU Member States away from fossil fuels and into more sustainable energy sources, especially in electricity, but also in heating and transport. At the same time, policies to improve energy efficiency have kept energy demand growth in check.
When assessing decarbonisation efforts across three key energy subsystems — electricity, heating and transport — the fastest historic progress and most significant business opportunities are found in the electricity subsystem. The main drivers in this system are variable renewable electricity generation from solar and wind and, more recently, developments in battery systems and a growing interest from prosumers. However, efforts must be accelerated and scaled up to meet the EU 2030 transformation benchmarks.
The EEA report ‘Renewables, electrification and flexibility — for a competitive EU energy system transformation by 2030’ looks at key aspects of decarbonisation and electrification as well as what are the key levers to make Europe’s energy system more competitive and secure by 2030.
