Potential impact of IED 2.0 on future air pollutant emission trends from selected energy intensive industries (2020-2050)
Chart (interactive)
The graph shows emission projections from 2020 to 2050 for a selection of air pollutants: NOX, SO2, PM2.5, NMVOC. Three scenarios are shown: Business as usual (BAU), Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) Minimum and IED Maximum. The data is based on a study from DG Environment (2020) considering the official air emissions inventory data.
The data include emissions from auto-generation of energy and process emissions. They exclude upstream emissions from energy purchased elsewhere and downstream emissions, including from transport and handling of goods. The sectors included are: iron and steel, aluminium, cement and lime, chemicals, glass, ceramics, and pulp and paper (see annex). Emissions data for 2020 are based on reported data while emissions from 2025 to 2050 are based on projected data. BAU data are based on the implementation of the current IED (IED 1.0). IED 2.0 max models the maximum technical feasibility scenario based on the most stringent implementation of the IED 2.0. IED 2.0 min models a less ambitious implementation scenario for IED 2.0.
