Map of analysed airports showing NO₂ and PM₂.₅ concentrations in airport areas and surrounding regions
Dashboard
The map shows the airports analysed in the study while the figures present annual mean concentrations of NO2 and PM2.5 in airport areas compared to their surrounding region. Clicking on an airport on the map opens a detailed fiche with additional information.
Clicking on an airport links to additional information, including 2023 SPO locations, a table with details for each SPO and EEA air quality maps comparing the airport area to the surrounding region, with weighted averages by land cover class.

Additional information
Clicking on an airport in the map links to a fiche with additional information specific to that location, including maps showing the 2023 sampling point (SPO) locations, a table with details for each SPO, and EEA air quality maps comparing the airport area to the surrounding region, with weighted averages by land cover class.
Methodology
The information on the graphic was compiled from the NO2 and PM2.5, European air quality data for 2023 (interpolated data), available from the EEA datahub. The data set provides values for the human health related indicator of NO2 and PM2.5 (annual average concentration) at 1km2 grid combining monitoring air quality data in a ‘regression-interpolation merging mapping’ methodology and the observational values of the air quality monitoring stations used in the interpolation. It covers Europe for the year 2023. The mean NO2 and PM2.5 concentrations "in airport areas" were identified as the mean of the values in gridcells within 1km from the airport area. The mean NO2 and PM2.5 concentrations "in surrounding region" are the mean of the values from the gridcells within 0.5 degrees longitude and 0.5 degrees latitude from the centroid of the airport area. (Airport area defined as the polygon classified as “Airport areas”, CLC code 123, in CORINE Land Cover 2018).
