The chart illustrates the trends in residual municipal waste for EU-27 from 2004 to 2020. Moreover, it shows the non-binding target of residual waste for 2030 (and the corresponding necessary trend line to achieve such target)

Methodology

The residual waste is calculated as the sum of landfilled and incinerated waste, as obtained in the env_wasmun Eurostat dataset. The target for 2030 corresponds to halving the amount of residual waste, with 2020 amounts (113 million tonnes) being taken as the starting date for the target, which resulted in a targeted amount of 56.5 million tonnes.

Residual municipal waste is here calculated as the sum of landfilled and incinerated waste, which corresponds to all treated municipal waste minus the recycled municipal waste (including both material recycling, and composting and digestion).
