The index is calculated from annual catches of sole and plaice in these areas and is the ratio sole/ (sole+plaice). In all seas SST is correlated with the SST anomaly in the North Sea shown in Figure 5.21, i.e. there has been a steadily increasing trend in the past 25 years.
