The figure shows the share of bathing water quality classes by type and bathing season.
Assessments are based on the two health parameters: E. coli and intestinal enterococci, as set out in the BWD. In 2024, 14,630 coastal waters and 7,218 inland waters were reported on by EU Member States. In previous years, the ratio of coastal to inland bathing waters was the same as in 2024: two-thirds of bathing waters were coastal and one-third were inland.

Methodology
Data extraction from EEA CWS wigeon MSSQL server (BWD_Production.assessmentResults.statusOverview). Coastal and transitional bathing waters are grouped as "coastal" bathing waters whereas rivers and lakes are grouped as "inland" bathing waters. Non-EU Member States (CH, AL, ME and UK) have been filtered out from this data extract as well as bathing waters classified as "0 - Missing data".
