Spatial development and key economic sectors in the Berchtesgadener Land District
The potential consequences of climate change for spatial development and the economic sectors in seven alpine key areas for on-site work (model regions) has been monitored in the framework of ClimChAlp. From 2006 to 2008, 22 project partners from all Alpine countries under the leadership of the Bavarian State Ministry of the Environment, Consumer Protection and Public Health worked in the Interreg III B Alpine Space project ‘ClimChAlp’ on the various impacts of climate change and elaborated adaptation strategies.
The Bavarian State Ministry of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and Technology carried out the German case study in the model region of the Berchtesgadener Land district (15 municipalities, 840 km², NUTS III, located in the south of Upper Bavaria), covering three main tasks:
(1) Identification and assessment of historic, current and potential future climate change impacts on spatial development and economic key sectors (Figure)
(2) Assessment of current instruments and measures of spatial planning and economy with regard to the expected climate change impacts
(3) Elaboration of ’change management’ recommendations for decision-makers and stakeholders in the model region and superordinate levels.
The ClimChAlp project constituted an important starting point for the transnational cooperation. Databases, expert networks, knowledge and experiences have been developed and shared in order to support prevention, management and adaptation to different impacts of climate change in the Alps, thus contributing to assure a sustainable development of the Alpine Space
