Summary

This report presents data for large point sources as provided in CORINAIR 90.

Part I (Introduction) presents an overview of the structure of the CORINAIR 90 inventory outlining confidentiality concerns, verification studies and further developments for CORINAIR 90.

Part II explains in detail the methodology used for estimating emissions from large point sources and provides a summary of data on thermal capacity and fuel consumption.

Part III gives an overview of emissions from large point sources and presents details for the ten largest emitting plants for SO2, CO2 and NOx for the source sectors Public Power Plants >300MW, Industrial Combustion Plants >300MW, Refineries and Inorganic Chemical Industries.

Large point sources are responsible for a major part of the total European SO2, CO2 and NOx emissions as reported in CORINAIR 90. They produced 68% of the total SO2 emissions, 36% of the total CO2 and 27% of the total NOx emissions.

On the basis of the CORINAIR 90 inventory Public Power Plants >300MW have been identified as the by far most important source sector of these LPS emissions, Industrial Combustion Plants >300MW being the next important one (see table 2).

In CORINAIR 90 a total of 19 million tonnes of SO2 was reported as large point source emission. The plants with the highest SO2 emissions are located in Spain, Bulgaria, Poland, Germany (former East) and the United Kingdom.

1,7 billion tonnes of CO2 were emitted from large point sources. Public Power Plants are the most important source sector and responsible for almost 70%. The plants with the highest CO2 emission are located in Poland, Greece, Germany (former east) and the United Kingdom.

The total NOx emission by large point sources amounted to 4,8 million tonnes. Public Power Plants are also dominating the emissions for this pollutant. The ten plants with the highest emissions of NOx are situated in the United Kingdom, Poland, Greece, Spain and Italy.

This report will not present full information on all point sources, due to the fact that although a considerable amount of data is available in CORINAIR 90, some is limited in its use due to various confidentiality restrictions specified by the national authorities and due to inconsistencies.
