See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the trend in total greenhouse gas emissions, excluding those from the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector. For comparison, two index lines (1990 value = 100) are included: the first refers to country specific emissions, while the second expresses total EU emissions.
In 2023, total greenhouse gas emissions (excluding land use, land use change and forestry) in Sweden amounted to 44.4 Mt of carbon dioxide equivalent. The emissions show a downward trend, although there are some annual fluctuations in a few sectors that affect the total emissions. Total emissions decreased by 38 % between 1990 and 2023. This is largely due to decreased emissions from the residential and commercial/institutional sectors, resulting from the replacement of the combustion of fossil fuels for heating with the use of district heating and electricity, including heat pumps. Emissions in the manufacturing and construction industries have decreased due to a reduction in the use of fossil fuels, mainly as a result of a shift to biofuels and electricity. Moreover, electricity and heat production are increasingly based on renewable energy. In recent years, emissions in the transport sector have decreased, mainly due to the use of more energy-efficient cars and the increased use of biofuel.
Total emissions in 2030 are projected to be below the 2023 level, mainly due to reduced emissions from the industry and transport sectors.
