See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the trend in total greenhouse gas emissions, excluding those from the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector. For comparison, two index lines (1990 value = 100) are included: the first refers to country specific emissions, while the second expresses total EU emissions.
There were relatively low greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at the time of Slovenia’s independence in 1991, after which the transition to a market economy began, leading to an increase in gross domestic product (GDP) and higher emissions. These increased until 2009, when the global economic crisis halted GDP growth, resulting in a decrease in emissions with minor fluctuations. In 2023, the total emissions amounted to 14.804 Mt of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂eq). The most significant reduction occurred in the energy sector due to lower levels of coal consumption. The building sector also saw a notable reduction in emissions, attributed to milder winters, better insulation and increased use of wood and heat pumps, as did the waste sector, .
Reducing GHG emissions remains a challenge for Slovenia. By implementing additional measures – such as increasing energy efficiency, investing in renewable energy sources, promoting rail transportation and zero-emission vehicles while establishing the necessary infrastructure, constructing nearly zero-energy and zero-emission buildings, and – in the sectors not covered by the EU emissions trading system, Slovenia is on track to meet its emission reduction target.
