See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the trend in total greenhouse gas emissions, excluding those from the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector. For comparison, two index lines (1990 value = 100) are included: the first refers to country specific emissions, while the second expresses total EU emissions.
In the Netherlands, greenhouse gas emissions decreased from 223 Mt to 153 Mt of carbon dioxide equivalent between 1990 and 2022, a decrease of 31 %. This was in line with the average EU decrease in this period (Figure 4). Between 2022 and 2023, there was a further decrease to just under 143 Mt. This was caused by a lower level of electricity production, and a lower level of natural gas consumption in the built environment due to high prices and a mild winter. Meanwhile, maintenance works at a major steel producer caused a 1.4 Mt emission reduction.
The national target for the reduction of greenhouse gases for . The national target is a 55% reduction in 2030 compared with 1990. It is very unlikely that the Netherlands will achieve this statutory climate target. With the current set of established and proposed policies, the Netherlands is on track for a reduction of between 44% and 52% in 2030 compared with 1990. There is a 50% chance of achieving the target if additional policies ensure a further 16 Mt emission reduction by 2030. To ensure a very high chance (95%), an additional 24 Mt reduction .
