See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the trend in total greenhouse gas emissions, excluding those from the land use, land use change and forestry (LULUCF) sector. For comparison, two index lines (1990 value = 100) are included: the first refers to country specific emissions, while the second expresses total EU emissions.
Albania’s mean annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions amounted to 10.8 Mt CO2eq/year in 2009–2016. GHG emissions from the energy sector are released because of fuel combustion activities, the extraction of solid fuels and the transmission and distribution of liquid and gaseous fuels. Emissions from the industrial processes and product use sector come mainly from the mineral and metal industry. Transport is the most significant source related to fuel consumption. GHG emissions from the agriculture and waste sectors increased between 2009 and 2019 by 4.7 % and 42 %, respectively. Total GHG emissions (without land use, land use change and forestry LULUCF) increased continuously between 1992 (105 %) and 2019 (230 %) as a percentage of emissions in 1990. The mitigation measures regarding energy, industrial processes, waste, agriculture and LULUCF accounted for in the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) scenario could help avoid emissions totalling 16 828 kt CO2eq during 2021–2030 compared with the business-as-usual scenario. The possible difference in 2030 is – 3 170 kt CO2eq compared with the business-as-usual scenario, which represents a mitigation impact of 20.9 %. Albania also signed the Sofia Declaration on the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans in 2020, committing to carbon neutrality by 2050.
