This is the first annual summary report from the European Topic Centre on Inland Waters (ETC/IW) which was appointed in December 1994 by the European Environment Agency’s Management Board to carry out specific tasks identified in the Agency’s work programmes.
The tasks carried out in 1995 by the ETC/IW were focused on the identification of legislative requirements for water resources monitoring, provision of an overview of the actual monitoring programmes in member countries and finally use of this information to design a freshwater monitoring network for the EEA area with the objective:
"to obtain timely, quantitative and comparable information on the status of inland waters (groundwater, rivers, lakes/reservoirs and estuaries) from all EEA member countries so that valid temporal and spatial comparisons can be made, and key environmental problems associated with Europe’s inland waters can be defined, quantified and monitored".
The report summarises and highlights the main findings in 1995 under five projects undertaken by the ETC/IW:
MW1: Water resources - quality and quantity. General approach to assessment
MW2: Inventory of water resources monitoring networks
MW3: Design of a freshwater monitoring network for the EEA area
MW4: Development and establishment of the European water quality monitoring network and databases
MW5: Key water resources issues
