The figure shows the trend in pollutant releases to water in the EU-27 from 2010 to 2020, using 2010 releases as a reference value. In addition, gross value added (GVA) from the industry sector is presented.

European data

Metadata

Additional information

GVA, gross value added; TOC, total organic carbon; Total N, total nitrogen; Total P, total phosphorous; Cd, cadmium; Hg, mercury; Ni, nickel; Pb, lead.

GVA is used as a proxy for the economic activity of industry in Europe, accounting for inflation and based on 2010 values.

Releases are described in terms of their TOC content, which indicates, in an aggregated form, their contribution to eutrophication, among other detrimental biological processes.

Germany, Lithuania and Slovakia did not report any data from 2017; Italy and Malta did not report data for 2020: in these cases the most recent data available have been used to populate the emissions trend.
