The figure shows the share of buses, trains, trams and metro (collective modes) and of inland waterways and trains (non-road modes) in total inland passenger and freight transport activities respectively in the EU-27. For reference, the absolute activities in the EU-27 for passenger and freight transport have been included.

Methodology:: Raw data for the EU-27 share (%) of collective and of non-road modes in total inland passenger and freight transport activity, respectively, were obtained from 2023 version of the statistical pocketbook EU transport in figures published by the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport. Raw data for the increase in total inland passenger and freight transport demand were retrieved from the same source.

Additional information

Collective modes refer to passenger transport via buses, including coaches and trolley-buses, trains, trams and metros. Non-road modes refer to freight transport via trains and inland waterways. Total inland passenger transport activity includes transport by passenger cars, buses and coaches, trains, trams and metros. Total inland freight transport activity includes transport by road, rail and inland waterways.
