Additional information

European seas cover the Northeast Atlantic, Baltic, Mediterranean and Black Sea; oil spilt in an incident includes all oil lost to the environment, including that which is burnt or remains in a sunken vessel. Despite the fact that the vast majority of spills are less than 7 tonnes, data on numbers and amounts are unreliable and such accidents are regarded to have a relatively small contribution to the overall quantity of oil spilled into the marine environment.
