Premature deaths attributable to exposure to PM₂.₅ at country level in 2005 and 2021
Chart (static)
Notes:
- The figure shows for each country two bars, with the estimated number of premature deaths per 100,000 inhabitants attributable to exposure to annual PM2.5 concentrations above 5µg/m3 in both 2005 and 2021.
- Iceland's value for 2021 is <1
- Kosovo *: Kosovo (under UNSCR 1244/99)
- Premature deaths due to exposure to fine particulate matter PM2.5 (2005-2021), EU SDG 11_52, European Environment Agency (EEA)
The number of premature deaths has been calculated according to methodology described in EEA´s briefing assessing the risks to health from air pollution (https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/assessing-the-risks-to-health/assessing-the-risks-to-health) and the ETC-EH Eionet report 2022/10 (https://www.eionet.europa.eu/etcs/etc-he/products/etc-he-products/etc-he-reports/etc-he-report-2022-10-health-risk-assessment-of-air-pollution-and-the-impact-of-the-new-who-guidelines). The current calculations will be presented in the forthcoming Eionet report "Health risk assessment of air pollution: assessing the environmental burden of disease of air pollution in Europe in 2021".
