The veterinary medicines regulation, Regulation (EU) 2019/6[4], introduced measures to restrict and optimise the use of antimicrobial medicines and to make compulsory and expand surveillance of antimicrobial use in animals. The Regulation includes the need to provide clear justifications when antimicrobials are administered to animals to prevent diseases. By promoting the prudent use of antibiotics among professionals such as helping them identify potential alternatives to antimicrobials, these efforts will further support the reduction in the risk of antimicrobial resistance in livestock and humans.
