Number of premature deaths attributable to exposure to fine particular matter (PM₂.₅), EU-27, 2005-2022
Chart (interactive)
The figure shows the premature deaths attributed to long-term exposure to PM2.5 above the WHO guideline level of 5µg/m3 in EU-27 in the period 2005-2022, and the Zero Pollution Action Plan target (by 2030, minimum 55% reduction of the premature deaths occurred in 2005).
This visualization was originally used in:

Additional information
There are no estimated data on mortality for year 2006 due to the absence of PM2.5 concentration maps for that year. For that reason, the line between the values in 2005 and 2007 appear as a dashed one, instead of a solid one as for the rest of the years
Methodology
The number of premature deaths have been calculated according to methodology described in EEA´s briefing Assessing the risks to health from air pollution (https://www.eea.europa.eu/publications/assessing-the-risks-to-health/assessing-the-risks-to-health) and the ETC-EH Report 2023/7 (https://www.eionet.europa.eu/etcs/etc-he/products/etc-he-products/etc-he-reports/etc-he-report-2023-7-health-risk-assessment-of-air-pollution-assessing-the-environmental-burden-of-disease-in-europe-in-2021). The current calculations are presented in the ETC HE Report 2024/6: Assessing the environmental burden of disease related to air pollution in Europe in 2022 (https://www.eionet.europa.eu/etcs/etc-he/products/etc-he-products/etc-he-reports/etc-he-report-2024-6-assessing-the-environmental-burden-of-disease-related-to-air-pollution-in-europe-in-2022/view).
