Ecological status of surface waters in the EU-27

The chart shows the ecological status or potential of surface waters, as reported by European countries in the context of the 3rd River Basin Management Plans - Water Framework Directive (WFD) implementation process. All water body categories are included in the percentage calculation, with the exception of territorial waters. Data are available at country and EU-27 aggregation level.

The chart shows Countries that have reported electronically to the EEA for the 3rd River Basin Management Plan and included in the "EU-27": Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden.
The values for surface waters represent count of water bodies.
All water body types have been included, except those marked as “unpopulated”
No distinction has been made between ecological status (of natural water bodies) and ecological potential (of heavily modified and artificial water bodies (HMWBs and AWBs).
Caution is advised when comparing Member States, as the results are affected by the methods Member States have used to collect data. Information on quality elements can help in understanding differences in country approaches.
