Environmental information systems
The indicator shows the share of designated terrestrial protected areas expressed as a share of the total land area. It includes areas protected by other effective area-based conservation measures. The EU and global targets aim for 30% protection.
Protected areas are managed under a strict management policy within the framework of the Cultural and Natural Heritage Protection Law and related regulations, principal decisions and management plans. Additionally, the Nature Conservation Regional Commissions, established under the same law, play a crucial role as an important management mechanism in ensuring the effective, careful and transparent management of protected areas. Türkiye prioritises an ecological-based scientific and sustainable approach to designating and managing protected areas, considering ecological, social and economic factors, while implementing strategies like ecological corridors and conducting in-depth research to conserve biodiversity and mitigate environmental impacts.
