See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the gross final consumption of energy from renewable energy sources (RES), expressed as a share of the gross final consumption of energy from all sources.
The total installed energy capacity (renewable and non-renewable sources together) in Türkiye was 27.3 gigawatts (GW) in 2000, of which 59 % was thermal power plants and 41 % was renewable power plants. In 2023, Türkiye’s total installed energy capacity increased by 306 % compared to 2000 and reached 110.9 GW, of which 57 % is from renewable power plants. As of the end of November 2024, Türkiye’s total installed capacity reached 115 GW and the distribution of its installed capacity by sources is as follows: 28 % hydraulic energy, 21.4 % natural gas, 18.9 % coal, 10.8 % wind, 16.7 % solar, 1.5 % geothermal and 2.7 % other sources. With these ratios, Türkiye ranks 5th in Europe and 11th in the world in terms of renewable energy production. Policies such as the Renewable Energy Sources Support Mechanism and the Renewable Energy Resource Areas, which are purchase guarantees to support renewable energy investments, have played a significant role in this achievement, especially for wind and solar power. Türkiye aims to increase its renewable energy capacity by adding 90 GW of renewables into its portfolio by 2035. With these additions, the share of renewable energy is expected to exceed half of Türkiye’s total installed energy capacity in 2035. In order to integrate these intermittent resources to the system, Türkiye has a USD 10 billion grid investment plan by 2030. Türkiye’s national energy plan forecasts energy supply and demand and targets a 65 % share of renewable energy in its total installed energy capacity by 2035. In addition, battery storage capacity is planned to be increased to 7.5 GW by 2035.
