See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the final consumption of energy by end users for all energy uses.
In 2002, total primary energy consumption amounted to approximately 77.1 million tonnes of oil equivalent (Mtoe), doubling by 2023 to reach 158.4 Mtoe. Similarly, final energy consumption rose from 59.4 Mtoe in 2002 to 114.9 Mtoe in 2023, reflecting Türkiye’s economic development and growing energy needs. Energy intensity, defined as energy consumption per unit of gross domestic product, has improved significantly in recent years, showing a marked decline. With the efficiency increasing projects programme and voluntary agreement supports carried out since 2009 to increase energy efficiency, approximately TRY 1 650 million of monetary savings and approximately 190 tonnes of oil equivalent per year (toe/yr) of energy savings were achieved with 835 projects. In 2023, primary energy intensity improved by 4.5 % compared to the previous year.
Türkiye’s national energy plan (2022) aims to support sustainable growth in energy consumption. A substantial portion of this growth is planned to be achieved through renewable energy sources. Furthermore, the electrification of the industrial and transportation sectors is expected to accelerate, contributing to a reduction in fossil fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
