Organic farming activities in Türkiye are carried out within the framework of the Organic Agriculture Law No 5262 and the Regulation on the Principles and Implementation of Organic Agriculture. Organic agriculture aims to protect, reconstruct and improve the ecosystem by ensuring organic practices at all stages of agricultural production, from farm to fork. Sustainability is ensured by certified organic agriculture systems from field to table. In order to monitor and ensure the traceability of organic agriculture systems, all activities are managed under the organic agriculture information system.
In order to develop organic agriculture in the country, organic agriculture projects are implemented, and sub-activities such as trainings and demonstrations are carried out within the scope of the extension and control of organic agriculture investment programme. In addition, producers engaged in organic farming activities are supported by grants depending on the area. With over 150 000 tonnes of exports, Türkiye was the sixth largest exporter of organic agri-food products to the EU in 2024.
Moreover, plans such as the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye’s 12th development plan and the 2024–2028 strategy plan of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry have included organic farming and other good agricultural practices that do not harm the environment, human and animal health and aim for food and feed reliability.
Organic farming in Türkiye is voluntary and certified organic areas change annually. The fight against an increasing pest population due to climate change has become more difficult. Organic farmers are the group most affected by this issue. The COVID-19 pandemic that began in 2020 has also led to a decline in organic agricultural production. Organic farmers continue to receive support on a field- and project-specific basis.
