See all EU institutions and bodiesThe indicator shows the share of the EU’s agricultural land used for organic farming and the distance to the target of a 25% share as set by the European Green Deal.
Since 2006, the share of organic farmland has more than doubled in Sweden. The land under conversion increased notably during 2007–2019 due to Sweden’s agri-environmental schemes for organic production and market initiatives. During recent years, the increase in the share of organic farmland has slowed and is now decreasing. The COVID-19 pandemic, inflation and a growing preference for locally produced food over organic food has led to this change. Marketing efforts for organic food by the Swedish retail sector are also limited due to a shifting focus towards Swedish and locally produced food. Organic products are also perceived as more expensive by consumers, regardless of the real price difference.
An increase in market demand was expected in 2024; however, for several product groups, production was expected to be outpaced by demand. Although an increase in demand could increase organic production, it is unlikely that Sweden will be able to reach the policy target of 25 % organic farmland in EU by 2030.
